Nitrogen oxides, or NOx for short, contribute to the formation of ground-level ozone, a molecule that inflames the respiratory passageways and exacerbates chronic diseases like asthma. In the United States, the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990 began a trend of gradually tightening NOx regulation that required many power plants to install equipment to reduce NOx.
